A new species of hammerhead shark has been discovered in the waters of the United States, specifically in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Its appearance resembles that of the familiar scalloped hammerhead shark, but its genetic makeup is entirely different.
This creature has yet to be classified or named.
American scientists report that the animal appears to be extremely rare, reproducing only in offshore waters along the coast of South Carolina. They believe this species is at risk of extinction and requires conservation efforts to help females care for their young.
Scientists plan to tag the sharks to gain a better understanding of their distribution range.
Ali Hood, Director of Conservation for Shark Trust in the UK, stated that with around 454 shark species recorded in the wild, the discovery of a new species is quite exciting.
