Neuroscience Experts Warn Against Screen Time for Children Under 6.
A new study published by Dr. Álvaro Bilbao, a leading Spanish neuropsychologist, suggests that excessive screen time for children under 6 years old can lead to unpredictable consequences.
Neuroscience experts warn to limit screen use for children under 6.
“Children who frequently use screens on phones, tablets, or TVs tend to become irritable. Additionally, their attention, memory, and concentration abilities decline,” Dr. Bilbao stated in a book he published.
He recommends that parents should limit the electronic device usage of their young children, as excessive use of these devices may increase the risk of psychological and behavioral issues, including attention deficit disorders and depression.
Dr. Bilbao explains that mobile applications are increasingly designed for high entertainment value, aiming to capture viewers’ attention.
In modern life, this approach is becoming more common among parents, as it temporarily distracts children from reality and can solve short-term issues when children cry. However, if this situation continues, children will gradually lose interest in other activities that are more beneficial for their development.
Specifically, instead of fostering greater concentration in children, entertainment models can cause stagnation in thinking, thereby affecting how young children think, feel, and behave during their formative years.
The author likens the healthy brain development of a child to nurturing an oak tree. Accordingly, the growth process from “seed” to maturity requires physical activity, a safe environment, and “nourishment” for the brain—essentially, the care provided by parents.
To further support his argument, the expert cites advice from technology leaders including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, both of whom have stated in interviews that they actively limit their children’s screen time.
Sharing his own parenting experience, Dr. Bilbao reveals that he has no applications on his mobile phone or tablet for his three children. Furthermore, he also restricts their time in front of the TV.
