Helmets Made from Dried Coconut Shells |
In early June, the Nhịp Cầu handicraft production facility (part of the Can Tho City Disabled People’s Club) began trial production of the first helmets made from dried coconut shells.
This initiative was developed by a group of faculty and students from the Department of Natural Resource Management and Environment, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences at Can Tho University.
The helmets are significantly lighter than conventional helmets. The outer surface is covered by a tough, solid layer, while the inner part is soft and cushioned thanks to the fibrous material. The cost of a coconut shell helmet ranges from 25,000 to 40,000 VND.
Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Chiếm, head of the Department of Natural Resource Management and Environment, stated: the test results indicate that the impact resistance of helmets made from coconut shells is safer than many helmets currently available on the market. The helmets can withstand a compressive force of up to 800 kg and are capable of resisting sharp objects during falls.
