A group of students from La Joliverie High School in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, France, has successfully developed a bioethanol-powered vehicle (see image).
The vehicle triumphed in the 2006 Shell Eco-Marathon held in Nogaro, France, which is dedicated to the cleanest and most fuel-efficient vehicles. It completed seven laps, consuming an amount of energy equivalent to driving 2,885 kilometers on just 1 liter of gasoline. The students produced bioethanol on-site at their school by fermenting leftover bread. Their aim was to demonstrate that gasoline is not the only fuel option available for cars, and that energy can be generated from simple materials like discarded bread.
