According to Yahoo’s announcement, the company will launch a new service today for tens of millions of customers using Yahoo Messenger (YM). These services, media content, and Web software are developed by Yahoo itself or created by independent software engineers, featuring a wide range of functionalities and utilities.
Yahoo Messenger is currently the third most popular instant messaging service, following eBay’s Skype and AOL’s AIM. With this move, Yahoo hopes to attract new customers while also solidifying its relationship with existing users.
“We want to provide users with convenient and reliable communication methods by enabling them to share software applications directly with each other over the Web,” a Yahoo spokesperson stated.
For example, YM users will be able to open a version of Yahoo Calendar for their friends, allowing everyone to plan gatherings, share information about entertainment events for the week, and provide maps to interesting locations directly through the chat window.
