Dr. Norma del Castillo, Deputy Director of the Cigar Research Institute, announced that Cuba has successfully conducted experiments to formulate high-quality proteins from fresh cigar tree stems.
The high-quality proteins have been processed to meet the technical standards set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, aimed at providing for patients suffering from kidney diseases.
Dr. Del Castillo stated that the Cigar Research Institute collaborated with the Biology Department of the Jose Antonio Echeverria Polytechnic Institute in Havana and the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Center to carry out these experiments.
Furthermore, Dr. Del Castillo mentioned that the Cigar Research Institute is in the initial phase of researching the formulation of Solanesol, a pharmaceutical for the production of Coenzyme Q10, which is used to treat cancer.
