Global revenue in the information technology (IT) services sector reached $624.4 billion in 2005, marking a 6% increase compared to 2004.
This statistic was recently released by Gartner.
“Typically, the outsourcing service sector is a major growth area within the global IT services market. However, this trend changed in 2005,” said Kathryn Hale, Vice President of Research at Gartner. “In 2005, support services and software projects achieved growth rates higher than the overall average for the IT services market. This had not happened since 2000.”
IBM continued to lead the global IT services market, but its growth rate was lower than the overall market average. Only Accenture and CSC among the top six companies experienced growth rates that exceeded the global average.
Healthcare organizations had the highest investment spending on IT services in 2005. However, this is still considered a relatively small figure in the larger market landscape. The healthcare sector’s investment rose from $17.9 billion in 2004 to $19.4 billion in 2005, achieving an 8.7% growth rate. Meanwhile, the financial services sector continued to generate the highest revenue for the IT services industry last year, with investment costs reaching $141.3 billion in 2005, up 7% from 2004.
Revenue from IT services in Eastern Europe and Africa reached $223 billion in 2005, representing a 5.8% increase compared to 2004.
“Project services, including consulting, development, and integration, achieved quite good growth in 2005, with a growth rate of 5.6% compared to 2004,” said Robert De Souza, a Gartner expert.
The list of the top five service providers remained unchanged from the previous year, although their rankings shifted. IBM held steady in the number one position, despite a slight decrease in market share. HP lost its second place to Accenture, which had previously been ranked fourth, with a 3.7% increase in market share in 2005. The fourth position now belongs to T-System.
