According to research by the Vietnam Colorectal Association, the prevalence of hemorrhoids in our country is quite high, affecting 50-55% of the population, primarily concentrated in the working-age group.

The main symptoms of the disease include: bleeding during bowel movements, protruding hemorrhoids, pain, and anal discharge …
Hemorrhoids are not life-threatening, but they significantly affect work and daily activities, leading to a serious decline in the quality of life for patients. This is especially true for Grade III and IV hemorrhoids and those with complications, which can only be treated through surgery.
Before 1993, there were many different surgical methods for hemorrhoids, such as the Milligan Morgan, Whitehead, and Toupet techniques, using various tools like electric knives, laser cutting, and high-frequency burning machines …
Although these methods achieved certain results, the treatment mechanism involved removing the hemorrhoid from the outer edge of the anus to the root, resulting in a large wound in the anal area, which has many pain-sensitive nerve endings, causing prolonged pain after surgery, longer hospital stays, and particularly leading to anal scarring and moisture.
The recovery time for patients undergoing traditional methods is about 3 to 4 weeks.
In 1993, colorectal specialist Antonio Longo (from Italy) introduced a new stapler hemorrhoidectomy technique (PPH03) produced by Johnson & Johnson at the colorectal surgery conference in Palermo, which received high praise.
This technique is based on new findings regarding the pathogenesis of hemorrhoids. The principle of the Longo method is to preserve the hemorrhoids in their normal physiological position, reduce or completely cut off blood flow to the hemorrhoids, and remove the part of the mucosa that protrudes outside the anus along with part of the hemorrhoid caused by the prolapse.
The outstanding feature of this method is that it does not cut the skin around the anal canal but lifts the hemorrhoids and the protruding mucosa into the rectum, a region devoid of pain-sensitive nerve endings, and then stitches inside the rectum.
As a result, the Longo method has the significant advantages of causing very little pain post-surgery, with a surgical duration of about 15-20 minutes and a hospital stay that can be as short as one day, without causing anal scarring or moisture.
Currently, the Longo method is the top choice for hemorrhoid surgery among colorectal specialists worldwide.
This method is widely applied in Vietnam at hospitals such as Tràng An Hospital, Việt-Đức Hospital, Hospital 108, Bạch Mai Hospital, St Paul Hospital, University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Chợ Rẫy Hospital, and Hoàn Mỹ Hospital…
