Nhà Phu Lagoon, located in Ninh Hoa District, Khanh Hoa Province, covers an area of 1,500 hectares. In the past, it was often subjected to destructive exploitation activities such as trawling, electric fishing, and the use of fine mesh nets. According to the plan, the marine conservation area of Nha Phu Lagoon will be implemented in 2007 and completed by 2010 for local management.
Since the Fisheries sector collaborated with the People’s Committee of the district to allocate land and assign management to each commune in a community-based manner, aquaculture activities in this area have developed sustainably. The biodiversity in the lagoon shows signs of recovery, with the emergence of juvenile lobsters, grouper fry, mullet, and crabs.
To protect biodiversity and develop resources, the Department of Fisheries has planned to transform Nha Phu Lagoon into a marine protected area, managed by local residents. However, unlike the marine protected area at Ran Trao – Van Ninh, the Nha Phu Lagoon marine protected area will include additional programs such as mangrove reforestation, ecological ornamental fish farming, and a dedicated area for showcasing aquaculture models.
