Uffington White Horse drawn with chalk |
The Uffington White Horse measures 114 meters in length and nearly 34 meters in height, drawn with chalk. It is one of the oldest hill figures in England.
Many believe it depicts a horse, while others argue it resembles a dragon. This relates to the legend of Saint George and the Dragon Hill, a low hill located in the valley below the Uffington White Horse.
According to legend, this is where Saint George helped the locals defeat a fierce dragon, with the dragon’s blood spilling out and preventing grass from growing. The White Horse may have been drawn around 3,000 years ago, with the earliest documentation of Uffington written in 1070. By 1190, historians referenced it in tales of the history of England.
