BenQ, a leading manufacturer of mobile phones and computer components from Taiwan, will launch its first Blu-ray disc recorder in August. However, its retail price will be no less than 1000 USD.

Despite this, the price is still significantly lower than the 1500 USD price tag of other brands, primarily from Blu-ray giants like Sony, Pioneer, and Philips.
Named the BW1000, this recorder is equipped with three laser beams to “handle” different formats, from DVD and CD to Blu-ray. In addition, it can record both single-layer and dual-layer Blu-ray discs.
A single-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 25GB, while a dual-layer disc can reach up to 50GB. To put it simply, even a single-layer Blu-ray disc can hold up to 2 hours of high-definition video or 13 hours of standard definition video.
Equipped with a Precision Tilt Control System, this disc recorder is resistant to vibrations, signal interference, and uneven recording processes. The SolidBurn feature automatically adjusts settings to optimize the final output.
The world’s first Blu-ray disc recorder, the BDR-101A, was launched by Pioneer earlier this summer; however, it could only record single-layer discs. Last week, Primera Technologies also announced a DVD Blu-ray recording system with the capability to record up to 50 discs at once, priced at 5295 USD.
Nevertheless, some experts believe that the ability to record dual-layer discs is actually not very important for the majority of users.
Van Baker, an expert from Gartner, stated that the vast majority of users have never even used a standard dual-layer DVD, due to its high cost compared to single-layer DVDs.
Therefore, Baker believes that the demand for high-end recorders like this is “very small,” although it is a positive sign for Blu-ray supporters.
