China is home to many unique airports, such as Beijing Daxing International Airport, which resembles a giant starfish, and is set to unveil another impressive structure. The Chinese architectural firm MAD Architects has revealed plans for a new airport terminal inspired by feathers in Changchun, Jilin Province, New Atlas reported on February 8.
Terminal 3 at Changchun Airport will span 270,000 m2 and feature 54 boarding gates, making it the largest air transportation terminal in Jilin Province. Once fully operational, this terminal will accommodate 22 million passengers each year and will connect to the nearby high-speed rail system. The idea behind the terminal’s unique shape is to provide a relaxing experience for weary travelers.
“When travelers arrive from the Longjia high-speed rail station or from the parking lot, they will encounter the unique fan-shaped profile of the terminal, resembling a feather suspended in the air. With a three-branch corridor structure surrounded by arches, the new terminal will maintain a harmonious overall layout while connecting with Terminals 1 and 2, offering additional seating for passengers. Upon entering, travelers will find a spacious, seamless ground floor that provides direct access to the subway, roadways, and other modes of transport,” MAD Architects explained.
The design of Terminal 3 is also influenced by Changchun’s designation as one of China’s “Garden Cities” due to its abundant greenery. As passengers approach the terminal, they will encounter forests, lakes, meadows, and gently rolling hills. Inside the terminal, there will be a garden featuring trees, low shrubs, water ponds, and streams, all sourced locally. MAD Architects refers to this as a “garden airport.” Natural light is also a focal point, with skylights incorporated into the ceiling.
The design for Terminal 3 by MAD Architects won an international architectural competition. The project is being developed in collaboration with the China Airport Design and Planning Institute and Beijing Architectural Design Institute. The expected completion date has not yet been announced.
