We have all experienced the sensation of flying in our dreams at some point. Today, thanks to the inventions of scientists, anyone who can afford $1.7 million for a new bed can guarantee themselves a night of floating high above the ground.

We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. Yet, the ordinary bed has undergone very little innovation over time. Therefore, the new floating bed, which hovers 40 centimeters off the ground, represents a significant breakthrough in sleep design.
First unveiled at the Millionaire Fair in Kortrijk, Belgium, this floating bed is the result of six years of research by Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars. Utilizing the opposing forces of large permanent magnets to levitate, the bed can support a weight of up to 900 kilograms, while a smaller flat surface of one-fifth its size can hold 80 kilograms.
From this product, many applications of “floating” technology have been envisioned, such as sofas, coffee tables, Japanese-style dining tables, and especially in exhibition areas.
Four thin cables ensure that the bed remains fixed in mid-air, forming the only connection to the ground. The only concern is whether sleeping in such a close electric field is truly safe.
