On February 8, the Hòa Vang Forest Protection Department in Da Nang City announced the discovery and capture of a male Black-cheeked Gibbon in a residential area.
Previously, on February 4, they received reports from locals about the appearance of a wild animal in the residential area of Nam Yen village, Hòa Bắc commune (Hòa Vang district).
The Hòa Vang Forest Protection Department coordinated with local authorities and residents to capture the animal.
The Black-cheeked Gibbon discovered in a residential area in Hòa Vang district, Da Nang City.
The gibbon is awaiting procedures to be released back into its natural habitat.
Upon examination, it was confirmed that this is a Black-cheeked Gibbon (scientific name: Nomascus gabriellae), belonging to the order Primates.
This gibbon is male, fully grown, in normal health, and weighs 3 kg.
According to the Hòa Vang Forest Protection Department, the Black-cheeked Gibbon is not native to Da Nang, and the individual recently captured appeared in the Nam Yen residential area without a clear origin or identified owner.
After its capture, since this species is classified as endangered and rare, which is beyond their authority to handle, the Hòa Vang Forest Protection Department reported and handed over the Black-cheeked Gibbon to the city’s Forest Protection Sub-Department to complete the necessary legal procedures for rehabilitation and natural release.
Currently, the city’s Forest Protection Sub-Department has received this individual. However, since the Black-cheeked Gibbon is not found in Da Nang, they are working on related procedures and developing a rescue plan as soon as possible.
