During the survey, the scientists from Hanoi University of Pharmacy, led by Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Ky, Head of the Department of Medicinal Plants, found Gynostemma pentaphyllum at altitudes above 2,000m in the northern mountainous regions of Vietnam, specifically in Cao Bang and Lao Cai. The full scientific name of the plant is Gynostemma pentaphyllum, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family.
Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a rare medicinal herb that has only been discovered in Japan, China, and Thailand. It was first researched in Japan under the name “Fukang Cao,” while in China it is known as JIAOGULAN.
Professor Dr. Pham Thanh Ky stated that Gynostemma pentaphyllum has effects that enhance lipid metabolism, help stabilize cholesterol levels in the blood, and effectively reduce fat without excessive dieting; it stabilizes blood pressure, prevents thrombosis, reduces complications related to the heart, blood vessels, and brain, combats aging, alleviates stress, and promotes appetite and better sleep.
This medicinal plant has received funding for research and is part of a state-level project with the code KC:10.07.03.03, studied from 2002 to 2004. By the end of 2005, Gynostemma pentaphyllum was used to produce tea. In early June 2006, the Ministry of Health approved the research project to produce Gynostemma pentaphyllum in capsule form. If the research results are successful, the capsule medication may be available within 2-3 years.
