The Huizhonyizhi Vocational College of Beijing, established by the Ministry of Information Industry of China, will be the country’s first training institution for game programmers.
A recent study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences indicates that the online gaming market here will generate $1 billion in revenue in 2006. However, the online gaming market is somewhat “cooling down” due to the limitations of local game developers. Without prompt support measures, profits in this emerging industry may fall into the hands of foreign companies.
The government’s efforts towards the online gaming industry are strongly supported by educators. According to them, video games are captivating and have a significant impact on the character of young people. Competing with foreign rivals is not only about reclaiming economic benefits but also cultural advantages.
“We will produce healthy games that promote the beautiful traditional culture of our nation to the youth through modern methods“, said Shen Jiangying, Editor-in-Chief of Netizen China.
According to her, imported games from the West may contain scenes of sex or violence, which are inappropriate for Eastern culture in China and pose a threat to young people.
