During the CWE 2006 seminar held yesterday (July 11), Intel’s Asia-Pacific marketing director, Mr. Jonathan Ong, presented vPRO, a new technology platform that the company claims will create a “revolution” in the digital workplace.
Intel vPRO is touted as a revolutionary shift in security, ease of use, and energy efficiency. The management and security features of vPRO are set to be integrated into Intel’s mobile platform next year. These features include the second generation of Active Management Technology (AMT) – integrated into the new chipset platform, and virtualization technology (VT) – integrated into the dual-core processor.
The AMT technology will enable IT managers to monitor and repair computers remotely when the system is powered off or experiences faults due to operating system errors or hard drive issues. The second version of AMT has the capability to isolate a computer infected with a virus before it affects other machines in the network, and then issue alerts to the administrator.
Meanwhile, Intel’s VT technology allows for the segmentation of hardware environments into distinct areas (partitions), enabling administrators to perform multiple operations on separate areas without interference. Notably, it also allows operations to be maintained independently, hidden, and completely segregated from the user (non-administrative).
According to Mr. Jonathan Ong, in addition to improving security and energy savings, the vPRO platform also serves as a budget-friendly solution, especially for small businesses with limited IT budgets, helping them to maximize the use of available resources.
Despite being a relatively new platform, vPRO has already garnered significant support from a number of prominent companies such as Adobe, Altiris, Avocent, Check Point, Cisco, Computer Associates, Hitachi JP1, HP OpenView, LANDesk, Lenovo, Lockdown Networks, Microsoft, Novell, Panorama SW, SAP, Skype, StarSoftComm, SyAM Software, Symantec, and Zenith. These companies are launching and will launch products that leverage the superior features of Intel vPRO.
From now on, Intel has widely implemented the vPRO platform primarily targeting enterprise customers. Intel vPro technology will be a part of the “Intel Stable Image Platform” initiative – a commitment to provide predictable changes and guarantee that Intel’s drivers and software will be supplied and maintained for 15 months from the product’s launch date.
