Founded just last year, YouTube has already claimed the top position in the online video sector in the United States, accounting for 29% of the country’s multimedia entertainment market. Out of every 100 people searching for videos online, 60 turn to YouTube. The platform’s popularity largely stems from its vast array of free videos available for streaming. Currently, YouTube is developing advertising services and other revenue-generating methods to ensure its operational sustainability.
The videos on YouTube are typically around two minutes long. These clips are curated and shared by the platform’s users. Additionally, the number of self-shot and edited videos is on the rise. To use YouTube effectively, a broadband internet connection is necessary to ensure clear, uninterrupted viewing without lag.
In June alone, a staggering 2.5 billion videos were viewed on YouTube. Each day, the platform sees an upload of 65,000 videos, an increase of 15,000 compared to May.
Following closely behind YouTube is MySpace, a social networking site aimed at teenagers, which holds a 19% market share. Other competitors include the interactive entertainment sections of Yahoo, MSN, Google, and AOL.
