Research from the University of Queensland (Australia) indicates that calcium supports bone health but may also play a role in the development of breast cancer cells.
Dr. Won Jae Lee, a member of the research team, stated that cells absorb calcium to regulate many essential biological processes in the body, which can aid in tumor growth and metastasis. This mineral acts as a signaling molecule within the body, and the signals sent by calcium to cells sometimes stimulate cancer development.
By inhibiting the signals sent by calcium, researchers found that the development of breast cancer cells significantly decreased. Understanding how to control and modulate the signals transmitted by calcium could pave the way for new treatment options for breast cancer in the future.
