According to forecasts, during the Lunar New Year of 2023, the Northern region may experience severe cold, with the possibility of hail in many places.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Cat 2023, the Central Highlands and Southern regions are expected to have favorable, dry weather. Meanwhile, the Northern region may face severe cold spells during the holiday.
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy, a specialist in natural disaster warnings and extreme weather, noted that hail could occur at the beginning of the year in the northern provinces, while drought is expected in the Mekong Delta.

In the early days of December, the Northern region welcomed its first severe cold spell, with some areas experiencing extreme cold, and temperatures dropping below 3 degrees Celsius. Notably, on the night of December 1 and the early morning of December 2, temperatures in Mau Son dropped to 1.6 degrees Celsius.
Meteorological agencies forecast that subsequent severe cold spells will be concentrated in January 2023 and the first half of February 2023. This winter, there will be more warm sunny days and fewer cold days compared to previous years, with the average temperature across the Northern and North Central regions trending 0.5-1 degrees Celsius higher than the multi-year average. Interspersed with warm spells, there will still be deep cold periods, but they will not last long. The average temperature nationwide from December 2022 to January 2023 is expected to be close to the multi-year average.
Regarding rainfall, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from February 2022 to February 2023, the Northern region is expected to have little rainfall. In January and February 2023, total rainfall in the North Central region is expected to be close to the multi-year average, while the Central and South Central regions are forecasted to be 10-40 mm higher.
The Central Highlands and Southern regions may experience scattered showers and thunderstorms from December 2022 to February 2023, with total rainfall in the first two months of 2023 expected to be 5-20 mm higher than the multi-year average for the same period.
From now until February 2023, it is forecasted that there will be 1-3 storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea that may directly affect the mainland of our country. From March 2023 to May 2023, there are currently no signs of storms or tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea or affecting our mainland.
