Authorities in Thanh Hoa Province are working to address the issue of a ancient tomb over 1,000 years old, discovered during the construction of Hàm Rồng Secondary School (located in Hàm Long Street, Hàm Rồng Ward, Thanh Hoa City).
Ms. Nguyễn Thị Hải, Principal of Hàm Rồng Secondary School, reported that on November 29, the construction team, while using an excavator to dig the foundation for the school’s administrative building, uncovered a suspected ancient tomb located 50-60 cm beneath the ground.
The tomb features an arch-shaped structure, built with red bricks, measuring 3 meters in length and 1.2 meters in width. Although it does not contain any human remains, it houses 10 artifacts including vases, bowls, jars, and fragments of ceramics and small metal objects.
“This area used to be the old administrative building, so when the school was being upgraded, this discovery was made. Currently, some functional rooms of the school are being used in conjunction with classrooms, which is quite inconvenient. The school hopes that the relevant authorities will soon assess and conclude about the tomb and provide an appropriate handling plan,” Ms. Hải stated.

Mr. Trịnh Đình Dương, Director of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Museum, indicated that based on the architecture and the artifacts found, it has been initially determined that this is a Han tomb dating back over 1,000 years. In the Hàm Rồng Ward area, similar tombs have been discovered in the past, but without any valuable artifacts remaining.
“These are grave goods buried with the deceased according to ancient customs. The relevant authorities and local government have requested a temporary halt to construction, documented the site, and will continue to evaluate the historical significance of the tomb and propose a handling direction,” Mr. Dương informed.
