A Rare Species of Gecko Discovered in the Giang River Basin, Khanh Hoa Province.
Rare gecko species in the Giang River basin.
The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has announced that scientists from the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, along with researchers from Russia and Germany, have discovered a new species of gecko in the Giang River basin, Khanh Hoa Province.
The new species has been named Raglai Gecko, after the Raglai ethnic group that resides in the Giang River basin, where this new gecko was found. In the Raglai language, the term “raglai” also means “forest,” highlighting the importance of forest ecosystems to the local community.
This new gecko species has a very limited distribution, only inhabiting granite caves along the river with evolutionary adaptations suited for cave life.
Scientists have noted that the Giang River basin ecosystem and surrounding river areas are being affected by human activities. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct biodiversity studies in this region soon to gather important data on biodiversity and to promote conservation efforts for the species in the area.
