Kayla Simpson, a 21-year-old American, suddenly experienced severe abdominal pain and thought she had appendicitis. She was taken to the emergency room, only to unexpectedly give birth there.
The sophomore student revealed that months before giving birth, she had been continuously losing weight. When the severe abdominal pain struck, she believed she was suffering from appendicitis and had no idea she was pregnant.
The young mother gave birth without knowing she was pregnant, and the baby is now one year old.
In a clip that has attracted nearly 17 million views, she stated that she still had regular menstrual cycles each month (lasting about 4-5 days) before giving birth.
She wondered, “Could I still have regular periods during the 9 months of pregnancy?” Yes, she answered.
Doctors can confirm that physiologically, women do not have menstrual cycles when they are pregnant, although some degree of vaginal bleeding is not uncommon. This may be due to changes in blood flow to the cervix, hormonal fluctuations, infections, or bleeding during implantation—when the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. However, significant bleeding—more than a few drops—at any point during pregnancy is a cause for concern, and one should inform a doctor or midwife.
Simpson shared that her belly was flat and she had only lost weight before giving birth because her body was naturally slender. She illustrated this with photos of herself in beachwear, showing a body that was “skin over bones.“
From the emergency room, her mother informed her father that “The girl is pregnant,” leaving him utterly astonished.
Now, the baby has turned one year old, and the clip titled “I Was Pregnant” from this young mother has gone viral on TikTok.
According to experts, the phenomenon of giving birth without knowing one is pregnant is not unusual. Among 2,500 women, there is typically one who gives birth without realizing she was pregnant. Simpson is one of those cases. Two days after giving birth, she returned home with a completely healthy baby and her body in normal condition.
