There are numerous science fiction films that feature the plot element of “A Comet Colliding with Earth”, leading to devastating natural disasters. An astronomer has repeatedly predicted and warned people about this. Planetary scientist Jason Barnes from the University of Idaho has calculated the time until “The Moon Collides with Earth.”
According to Forbes magazine, Barnes has determined that after 65 billion years, the Moon and Earth will collide. Barnes stated: “Based on current observable phenomena, the Moon is moving away from Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm per year. This phenomenon is caused by the Earth’s rotation speed increasing by 2.3 milliseconds (one-millionth of a second) each century, gradually slowing down.”
After 65 billion years, the Moon and Earth will collide.
In reality, astronomers have warned that in about 6 billion years, the Sun may expand into a “red giant star”, potentially engulfing the nearby planets, such as Mercury and Venus. As a result, some scientists believe that Earth and the Moon may also be consumed by the Sun at that time.
Barnes posits that approximately 6 billion years from now, the Sun will decompose into a white dwarf, while simultaneously engulfing Earth. If Earth and the Moon were to exist until the time of their collision, the Earth at that point would have long since transformed into a “snowball.”
If Barnes’ calculations are correct, then the Earth-Moon system must first safely endure the event of 6 billion years from now before worrying about the Moon colliding with Earth.
Many netizens have commented: “We won’t need to wait for 6 billion years; humanity will self-destruct the Earth long before then,” “I wonder how many times I’ve died already,” “Whether humanity can survive another 5,000 years is still a question; we might have already self-destructed.”
