To establish this new record, Vision Marine Technologies collaborated with several companies worldwide during the development of the boat. Specifically, the company partnered with the boat manufacturing company Hellkat Powerboats (USA) to create the V32 catamaran measuring 9.75 meters in length. The boat is designed to accommodate the necessary battery packs that power the pair of E-MotionTM electric motors characteristic of Vision Marine Technologies. The Canadian company also selected a unique hull design optimized for aerodynamics to set the new record.
The engineering team at Vision Marine Technologies worked alongside American boat racer Shaun Torrente to develop the V32. Shaun Torrente was also involved in assembling and testing the V32 in Florida for several months.
In collaboration with Octillion Power Systems (USA), the race sponsor, Vision Marine Technologies created a specially shaped battery pack to power the V32. The onboard control system was enhanced by Nextfour Solutions (Finland), while the external propulsion systems were designed by the American company Weissman Marine.
On August 28, over 100,000 spectators watched Shaun Torrente pilot the V32 at a demonstration boat race on Ozarks Lake, Missouri, USA. Torrente and the V32 electric boat set a new world record with a speed of 175 km/h, surpassing the previous record of 144 km/h.
“The record of 175 km/h is groundbreaking and will certainly bring fame to Vision Marine Technologies and the E-MotionTM technology in the electric boat sector. We have once again proven that transitioning to electric power in the maritime industry is within reach. We are getting closer to eliminating the enormous carbon emissions that our planet suffers from due to the use of internal combustion engines,” said Alex Mongeon, CEO and co-founder of Vision Marine Technologies.
“This achievement is the result of many years of technical collaboration with European and American partners. We have worked hard to optimize the electric motors, 700 V batteries, cooling systems, and integrate hardware and software,” shared Xavier Montagne, Chief Technology Officer of Vision Marine Technologies. As the company ramps up production of electric outboard motors and batteries for broader use in more vessels, new world records may be set in the future.
