In an announcement made on July 20, AI research company OpenAI stated that it is conducting widespread beta testing of DALL-E, an advanced software that generates images from textual descriptions. According to a video on OpenAI’s website, DALL-E technology is creating images of a polar bear playing guitar, a koala bear playing basketball, and the famous portrait of the Mona Lisa with a mohawk hairstyle.
OpenAI reported that many users have utilized DALL-E to create music videos for young cancer patients and to design magazine covers. The company mentioned that in the coming weeks, they will send invitations to one million people on the waiting list to experience the latest version of this AI tool.
Amid concerns that DALL-E and similar tools could be misused in future misinformation campaigns, OpenAI stated that they have been working with researchers and developers to build safeguards to limit the abuse of this technology.
OpenAI emphasized that they do not upload images of real faces and strive to avoid creating likenesses of public figures, such as celebrities or political figures. The filters integrated into DALL-E also function to block violent, political, sexual, or other prohibited content, and the system is designed to avoid assumptions about race or gender.
