On May 27, the Guinness World Records organization announced a new record in the category of eating three Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest peppers in the world. Mr. Foster surpassed the previous record of 9.72 seconds set by Mike Jack from Canada.
The Carolina Reaper has an average heat level of 1,641,183 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), compared to the average heat level of jalapeño peppers, which is 2,500-8,000 SHU.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) previously published a report about a 34-year-old man who experienced headaches described as “like being struck by lightning” after eating a Carolina Reaper during a competition in the USA in 2016. This individual had to be hospitalized immediately. CT scans revealed that his cerebral blood vessels narrowed at the time he consumed the pepper.
In Mr. Foster’s case, the California man undertook his personal challenge at the Seaport Shopping Center in San Diego on December 11, 2021. Ultimately, he consumed six peppers to officially set a new record after his first attempt was not recognized. Following the verification period, Guinness confirmed Mr. Foster’s new record on May 27.
To prepare for this challenge, Mr. Gregory shared that he had consumed “a ton of hot sauce and many other super-hot peppers.”
