After a loud noise from the ground, locals rushed over to discover a deep hole approximately 15-20 meters deep and over 3 meters wide.
On the morning of May 17, in an interview with reporters, Mr. Trần Đức Lợi, Vice Chairman of the Quỳ Hợp District People’s Committee in Nghệ An Province, stated that a large deep hole had just appeared in the area of Công Village, Châu Hồng Commune following a loud noise from the ground.
Previously, around 3 PM on May 16, while working in the fields, several locals were startled by a loud noise. Approaching the area where the noise originated, many residents were alarmed to find a hole over 3 meters wide and approximately 15-20 meters deep.
The “death hole” is over 3 meters wide and approximately 20 meters deep, appearing after a loud noise.
“After receiving the report, the district requested the Châu Hồng Commune People’s Committee to immediately install warning signs, set up barriers, and prohibit curious residents from approaching to ensure safety. This morning, May 17, a district task force will directly inspect the site,” Mr. Lợi added.
The “death hole” appeared in a flat agricultural area.
It is known that Châu Hồng Commune has been a hub for mineral extraction such as white stone and tin ore for several decades. From late 2019 to April 2022, Châu Hồng Commune experienced 279 domestic water wells running dry, 13 sinkholes in rice fields near streams, and 114 houses showing cracks and fissures.
In light of these issues, the Quỳ Hợp District People’s Committee has contracted with the North Central Geological Federation to conduct a detailed survey and assessment to find the cause of the subsidence phenomenon.
