According to Google, Professor Ton That Tung was born on May 10, 1912, in Hue, Vietnam, during a time when the French colonial government prohibited Vietnamese from pursuing advanced medical education. As he grew up, Professor Ton That Tung opposed this harsh policy and sparked a movement for educational equality. His efforts ultimately compelled the colonial government to allow Vietnamese students to participate in the entrance exams in 1938.
During his four years of postgraduate studies, Professor Ton That Tung performed over 200 liver surgeries and became the first to conduct meticulous research on the liver.
His extensive knowledge of liver anatomy led him to realize that the traditional liver surgery method—which took 3 to 6 hours to complete—was unnecessarily risky and cumbersome.
Professor Ton That Tung developed a new surgical method that reduced bleeding by tightening the hepatic veins before surgery, shortening the operation time to just 4 to 8 minutes.
His groundbreaking technique, often referred to as the “Ton That Tung Method”, is utilized by surgeons worldwide due to its ability to minimize blood loss and save countless lives.
In a statement introducing the Doodle on May 10, Google congratulated Professor Ton That Tung on his birthday, emphasizing, “Thank you for breaking the boundaries of surgery to permanently change medicine.”
The Google Doodle celebrating the 110th birthday of Professor Ton That Tung has reached users in Vietnam and Germany.
