Have you ever wondered why dating and relationships seem so difficult for you? Have you met many people, only for them to “go silent and disappear” after just one or two dates?
In a psychological study involving nearly 1,000 volunteers, scientists from the University of Nicosia in the Republic of Cyprus identified “11 most annoying factors in flirting and dating”, which include:
- Shallow, lack of investment, not serious about the relationship
- Poor hygiene
- Lack of special attention
- Too different mindsets
- Vulgar language
- Lack of intelligence
- Arrogance
- Lack of humor and self-respect
- Excessive intimacy
- Poor appearance
- Stinginess

Unfortunately, many people do not realize that their unintentional habits or flirting tactics, which they consider charming, can annoy their partners and “kill off” a potential romantic relationship quickly.
According to the research team, the first thing to avoid is being shallow. Instead, spending time showing genuine interest, getting to know each other, arranging dates in nice places, and demonstrating sincere intentions for the relationship will leave a good impression on the other person.
Other factors to avoid during a date include: using foul language, poor hygiene, being easily offended, and being overly arrogant.
Additionally, avoid overexposing oneself. A person lacking knowledge or intelligence will not make a good impression, but if they overly boast about their qualifications or show off their abilities, it can also annoy their date.
Finally, poor appearance and stinginess are also factors that can break down a romantic relationship.
“Young people will have a higher chance of success if they invest in their relationships, avoiding making vulgar comments, gender discrimination, and excessive intimacy. Importantly, they should especially avoid flirting with multiple people at the same time,” said scientist Menelaos Apostolou.
According to Menelaos Apostolou, young people should improve their flirting skills as well as their “appeal” by enhancing their appearance. For instance, taking care of skin and hair, grooming, and cleaning nails before a date.
One should not be stingy, nor assume that the other person should pay for the date. Whether you are male or female, offer to pay the bill. The outcome depends on how both individuals handle it to ensure they both feel comfortable.
From this research, the team from the University of Nicosia believes that women are more sensitive to men and nearly all 11 factors listed above can annoy them.
The reason may stem from maternal instincts. They will bear and raise children, so their instincts urge them to be strict when dating to avoid making mistakes in choosing a partner.
Interestingly, the list of 11 annoying factors in romantic relationships may change with age. Younger individuals tend to seek “dating experiences” with different partners rather than establishing a long-term intimate relationship. For this goal, they lower their standards and become less sensitive.
In contrast, as people age and gain more relationship experience, they become more focused on finding a long-term partner. Consequently, their standards for dating and “closing the deal” on that relationship become higher.
The scientists hope their findings will be useful for long-term single youth to find their true love soon. At the same time, it will provide mental health professionals and psychologists with additional information to assist clients facing difficulties in this area.
