A convenience store perched on a sheer cliff over 100 meters above the ground in China has recently become a hot topic among netizens. Located in the Shan Niu Chai Tourist Area, in the city of Yiyang, Hunan Province, this store spans approximately 2 square meters and can accommodate only one person at a time.
Convenience store on the mountainside.
What convenience does a store in such a location offer? Is there a store owner or staff present? How do they get to work each day? These are questions that internet users have raised. In reality, this store was built in 2017 and opened at the end of April 2018, constructed from a series of wooden planks supported by steel beams. The structure is very lightweight, so experts believe it won’t damage the original mountain structure. There is a small platform below to prevent items from falling off.
According to the store owner, this is a “fun-selling project”, not for profit, but to provide convenience (even though the location is quite inconvenient) and to supplement the energy of hikers with energy drinks, bread, and more. Each bottle of water here is sold for just 2 yuan (approximately 7,000 VND).
Supplying goods to the store is no simple task. Every day, they must carry water and food across a suspension bridge, then climb up to the convenience store, and use ropes to pull the items up.
Once the goods are delivered, they stay at the store all day, waiting to serve passing customers. According to the seller, while food and drink are easy to manage, the most challenging part is finding a place to relieve oneself. Since climbing down is exhausting, they often… hesitate to drink too much water.
Employees reveal that the initial work experience here was quite intense, sweating every time they climbed, but over time they became accustomed to it and it turned into a great way to exercise.
