The ancient Chand Baori stepwell, with its unique and impressive architecture, is one of the top tourist attractions in the mystical country of India.
Chand Baori in Abhaneri village is one of the oldest and most famous structures in the state of Rajasthan. The well was commissioned by King Chanda of the Nikumbha dynasty in the 9th century. As one of the largest stepwells in the world, Chand Baori was built to store water and provide a cool resting place. It also served as a gathering spot for the local community as well as royalty.
Perfectly aligned steps.
Not only an ancient water storage facility, today, Chand Baori is an architectural wonder with 3,500 symmetrical steps that cover three sides of the well, leading down to the bottom. The well’s interior is square-shaped, narrowing as it descends, creating a space reminiscent of an inverted Egyptian pyramid.

The perfectly aligned steps create a stunning visual effect when combined with natural light, mesmerizing the viewer. From the ground to the water’s surface, there are 13 levels of steps with a depth of about 20 meters, and there may be several more levels below the water’s surface.

Dominating the four sides of the well is a mossy green water basin, providing a refreshing feeling, with temperatures at the bottom of the well always 5-6 degrees Celsius lower than at ground level.

On the opposite side of the well stands a multi-story mansion with intricately carved arches and beautiful religious sculptures. Inside, there are royal living quarters with rooms for the King, Queen, and a stage for performing arts. Additionally, this side of the well features the temple dedicated to Harshat Mata – the goddess of joy and happiness.
The mansion built within the well serves as both a royal retreat and a significant highlight of the ancient stepwell.
