A New Type of Concrete from a Dutch Company Provides a Surface Ideal for Moss Growth, Creating Green Facades in Cities.
The Dutch company Respyre has developed biodiversity concrete suitable for moss growth on its surface, as reported by Design Boom on February 16. “Any moss surface, whether small or large, becomes an automatic and natural respiratory system for the city. Our system follows the natural cycles of resources and environmental sustainability. With this, we are helping cities to breathe,” the company stated.

Respyre has created a mixture that enhances porosity, water retention, tiny pore structure, acidity, and other nutrients for the concrete, creating an ideal environment for moss to thrive.
Moss is particularly suited for green facades because it has rhizoids instead of roots. Rhizoids are non-invasive and primarily function as an adhesive, helping to keep the facades of buildings in good condition. In contrast, invasive roots can be demanding and harmful to their environment. Biodiversity concrete provides a surface that meets the needs of rhizoids.

This new type of concrete can be used for plastering or pouring on-site. It can be easily applied to existing structures or new projects, making it a cost-effective option for integrating nature into urban environments.
“When placed in a suitable environment, biodiversity concrete will allow moss to grow spontaneously. With added nutrients, moss is stimulated to grow rapidly. Additionally, moss can also be planted to achieve even faster results. Either way, it will cover the surface within months and immediately begin to provide benefits,” Respyre explained.
Respyre aims to support those who want to use moss on the surfaces of their buildings, projects, and architectural works. By selecting the right type of moss for the appropriate environment, advising on suitable locations, and assisting in facade design, the company seeks to ensure that the system will naturally provide significant benefits.
