On January 28, 2007, Microsoft researcher Jim Gray went missing at sea despite being an experienced sailor. He set sail on his boat with plans to head to the Farallon Islands.
On the morning of his disappearance, he spoke to his wife on the phone, reassuring her of his well-being and leaving a cheerful voicemail for his daughter, indicating that suicide was not a likely option.
Strangely, the Coast Guard reported that they did not receive any calls from Jim Gray, nor did they receive any distress signals from his boat indicating it had sunk. After extensive and unsuccessful search efforts, Jim Gray was ultimately declared dead under California law in 2012.
In 2005, a couple named George and Jennifer Smith went on a honeymoon cruise when Mr. Smith disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Official investigations concluded that Mr. Smith accidentally fell overboard somewhere between Greece and Turkey, but his family believes he was murdered. Four other passengers were detained and questioned regarding the matter, but the case remains unresolved to this day.
On December 11, 2019, Felicity Loveday, 83, and her son Adrian Meneveau, 56, mysteriously disappeared during a sea trip. There are theories suggesting that both fell victim to malevolent spirits roaming the salty waters. Five days later, some fishermen found their empty boat capsized, but no signs of either of them were discovered.
Marie Empress was a British actress who went missing on an ocean liner in 1919, just before it was set to dock in New York. She was last seen by a stewardess who brought her a glass of water, and it is believed that Marie Empress died after falling overboard.
Because she was primarily known for her “vampire” roles on stage and in films, the press initially portrayed her disappearance as a publicity stunt. However, in 1921, authorities officially declared Marie Empress dead.
On March 22, 2011, a crew member of the Disney Wonder named Rebecca Coriam was reported missing during a cruise when she did not show up for work. Before her disappearance, the ship’s CCTV captured footage of her having an emotional phone call on the ship’s intercom. That was the last time she was seen by her colleagues, and her whereabouts have remained a mystery since that phone call.
