The painting is believed to have been created by hunters during the Ice Age |
Experts have dated the oldest rock painting in England, found in the Creswell Crags area, to be over 12,800 years old.
A team of archaeologists from the universities of Bristol, Sheffield, and Open has dated this painting using measurements based on uranium radiocarbon traces in the limestone samples associated with the artwork.
The archaeologists reported discovering numerous drawings on the walls and ceilings of caves in 2003. These drawings depict animals such as the extinct European bison, which is no longer found in England, among other illustrations.
These drawings were created by groups of hunters during the Ice Age and were unearthed from caves in Creswell, dating back 13,000 to 15,000 years ago. This new finding suggests that art may have emerged much earlier than previously thought, attributed to those who created these paintings.
