Located just east of Afton, at the foot of a rocky mountain in Wyoming, USA, Intermittent Spring is considered one of the most mysterious natural wonders in the world, as it stops flowing every 15 minutes.
From a crack in the mountainside, a large volume of water cascades down, forming a beautiful small stream. However, after a short while, the stream runs dry for about 15 minutes. This cycle repeats itself.

This phenomenon has been occurring for hundreds of years. On average, this unusual spring flows for only about 12 hours a day, which is half the time compared to other natural streams. The water here is crystal clear and icy cold.
There are also other natural springs that exhibit similar phenomena, such as the Ebbing & Flowing Spring in Tennessee, USA, which flows for nearly 3 hours, and Gihon Spring located near the ancient city of Jerusalem, Israel.
Although the reason behind the intermittent flow is not fully understood, scientists have proposed a convincing hypothesis to explain this mystery.
They believe that the rhythm of the spring depends on the siphon effect, which causes it to flow and stop at certain intervals. This effect is commonly seen in everyday life, such as in sinks, basins, and lavatories.
Essentially, water continuously flows into an underground cave but must pass through a narrow opening that has its highest point above the surface of the stream.
When the water level reaches that high point, it creates a siphon effect. Water is drawn out of the cave, forming the flow of the stream.
However, after some water has flowed out, the water level drops, allowing air to enter and interrupting the flow. As the water rises again, the flow is restored.
Professor Kip Solomon, a hydrologist at the University of Utah, stated: “We can’t think of any other explanation at this time. The gas content in the spring water has been tested at the University of Utah. Data shows that the water has been in contact with air underground. This further confirms the validity of the siphon theory explanation.”
Afton Spring was accidentally discovered by a lumberjack while working in the area. While fetching fresh water, he noticed that a relatively large stream suddenly stopped flowing and began again a few minutes later.
The rhythmic flow of this spring in Wyoming only occurs continuously from late summer to fall, when the groundwater level is low. Therefore, take note if you plan to explore this mysterious natural wonder.
