The mystery of the beer-scented spring in Hawaii has recently been solved as scientists discovered that the spring water contains 1.2% ABV (alcohol by volume, or the amount of alcohol in milliliters per 100 milliliters of liquid).
The phenomenon of the spring water smelling like beer had puzzled residents in Hawaii for a long time. However, the cause has now been identified.
It turns out that a rainwater drain from a nearby brewery was responsible for transforming the spring water into alcoholic water.
The rainwater drain has since been blocked. The pipeline runs from Paradise Beverage, a liquor and beer warehouse located across a nearby highway.
According to Hawaii News Now, a sample from the spring, located in the town of Waipio on the island of Oahu, showed “up to 1.2% alcohol” in the water and “approximately 0.04% of its content” being sugar.
Paradise Beverage is still investigating the cause of the alcohol leak and is working with local authorities to determine the source.
Anthony Rowe, the company’s operations manager, stated: “Right now, we have asked the Department of Transportation to send a representative to inspect, and we are working with them. We have also contacted the Department of Health.”
