The village of Shenlongwan is renowned for its delicious walnuts and pears, but transporting agricultural products to the market used to be an almost insurmountable challenge for the locals. This was due to the extremely difficult transportation routes.
The village has been home to a small group of farmers for hundreds of years, living almost completely isolated from the outside world.
Before the year 2000, residents of Shenlongwan had to navigate through 8 towns across three different provinces to reach the city, risking their lives climbing narrow and dangerous ladders to reach a steep pass.
Residents in Shenlongwan, located deep in the Taihang Mountain range, had to climb steps along the cliffs or take a long detour through 8 towns to reach the city center of Zhangshi.
One day, the villagers decided that things had to change; they planned to build a road for easier access.

To connect the isolated village with the outside world, locals began constructing this impressive road in 1985, which was completed and opened for use in 2000.
The 1,526-meter-long road was built along the steep cliffside. This road has connected the village of Shenlongwan in Shanxi Province, China, to the outside world.
Since traveling to Shenlongwan has become easier, the village’s unique landscape has attracted more tourists, especially those passionate about calligraphy, photography, and painting.
Today, more than 60% of the over 700 villagers are involved in tourism-related businesses. The village’s natural beauty continues to draw visitors.
