A couple in New Zealand is eagerly waiting to see if the giant potato weighing nearly 8 kg they just dug up will set a new world record.
Colin and Donna Craig-Brown, who live in Hamilton, New Zealand, were weeding their garden at their small farm when their spade hit something large just beneath the surface.

The couple began to dig around the object, with Mr. Craig-Brown wondering if it might be some sort of bizarre giant mushroom. However, when he pried it up, scraped off the outer skin, and tasted it, he realized it was a potato.
When the Craig-Browns placed the potato on the scale, they were amazed to find it weighed nearly 8 kg. The couple had never seen a potato this large, comparable in size to a standard sack of potatoes or a small dog.
They are currently waiting for confirmation on whether this is indeed the largest potato in the world.
Mr. Craig-Brown has expressed a desire to turn this oversized potato into potato vodka. “We can’t believe it; the potato is enormous,” he stated.

The potato has an unusual, bumpy shape and its massive size has made it a local sensation. The couple had to create a small cart specifically to transport the potato.
The current Guinness World Record for the heaviest potato stands at 5 kg, held by a British couple who achieved this feat in 2011.
When asked about their secret to growing such an incredible oversized product, Mr. Craig-Brown mentioned that he and his family have no gardening secrets. Typically, they use cow manure and straw in their garden to enhance the nutrients for their crops.
For a long time, the couple only grew cucumbers and had not planted any potatoes. Mr. Craig-Brown remarked: “This is a mystery to me; it’s one of nature’s delightful little surprises.”
