Turkey has discovered a gold mine with reserves of up to 99 tons. This information has been confirmed by the Turkish news agency Anadolu to international media.
Notably, news about the accidental discovery of a “treasure” of gold often appears on the front page of Anadolu, but this particular news has been accompanied by a series of articles.
The reason this news has become more urgent than ever is due to the estimated value of this gold treasure being around 6 billion US dollars, which is even higher than the GDP of many economies around the world.
Additionally, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, stated in a media response that the current gold reserves of Turkey are approximately 1,175 tons. Thus, this newly discovered gold mine of 99 tons represents about 1/12 of the country’s total reserves.

According to the statistical site Worldometer, the GDP of the Maldives is 4.87 billion dollars, Liberia is 3.29 billion dollars, Bhutan is 2.53 billion dollars, Burundi is 3.17 billion dollars, and Lesotho is 2.58 billion dollars. These economies are significantly smaller than the gold mine discovered in Turkey. Similarly, Mauritania, Montenegro, Barbados, Guyana, and other economies are also smaller than the aforementioned 6 billion dollar gold mine.
The gold mine was discovered in the western coastal area of the peaceful town of Sogut. After a bidding process, in 2019, Turkey’s Gubretas Fertilizer Production Company won and became the owner of this massive gold mine.

Fahrettin Poyraz, head of the Gubretas Agricultural Credit Cooperative, also confirmed to the media that the value of the gold treasure is approximately 6 billion US dollars.
Mr. Poyraz stated that this gold will be mined over the next two years and will greatly benefit the Turkish economy. The stock price of Gubretas also rose by 10% following the news of the gold treasure discovery.
