On a tall tree, there was a large Great Blue Heron (Scientific name: Ardea herodias), but the parent birds had gone out to hunt, leaving only the young heron behind. They were unexpectedly ambushed by a predator, and one of the two young herons became a victim.
Great Blue Heron attacked by an eagle in the nest on a tree.
The attacker of the young heron was a Bald Eagle (Scientific name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus) – a fierce rival of the Great Blue Heron. One of the two chicks was killed and subsequently eaten.
This species is the largest heron in North America, measuring 91–137 cm from head to tail with a wingspan of 167–201 cm, and weighing between 1.82–3.6 kg. In contrast, the Bald Eagle has a wingspan of 1.8 – 2.3 m and weighs between 3 to 6.3 kg.
