The “aerial tug-of-war” between an eagle and a red fox has been captured by a wildlife photographer at San Juan Island National Historical Park in Washington State, USA.
The photographer documented the moment an eagle attempted to snatch prey from the red fox during a struggle at an altitude of about 6 meters.
The fox struggles with its prey against the eagle in the air.
Mr. Ebi mentioned that he had visited the park a few days earlier to observe the red foxes hunting before sunset. One of the foxes had caught a rabbit and was carrying it away.
“I took out my camera to capture this scene. Then, from behind, I heard the sound of a bald eagle. I turned around and saw it swooping in quickly,” the photographer Ebi recounted.
“I was amazed by this scene, which was more dramatic than I had anticipated. I thought the fox would drop the rabbit to give the eagle an easy meal. But instead, the fox kept the rabbit tightly in its mouth and was pulled along by the eagle. The eagle then lifted both the fox and the rabbit into the air, creating an even more intense confrontation.” – the photographer added.
The confrontation lasted about 8 seconds at a height of 6 meters, with both animals refusing to give up their prize. Ultimately, the eagle managed to seize the rabbit from the fox’s mouth and then released its opponent back to the ground.
