While exploring marine life off the coast of California, scientists accidentally discovered a “rare Pokémon,” a purple bobtail squid with large, round, sparkling eyes that look very innocent.
One member of the team even exclaimed, “It looks so fake, like a toy that accidentally fell down here.” as the submarine’s camera zoomed in on the creature.
After investigation, scientists identified it as the Rossia pacifica, a species of squid that resembles a cross between an octopus and a squid. We invite you to watch the video of this adorable creature.
Purple bobtail squid.
The purple bobtail squid (scientific name: Rossia pacifica) is approximately 2 years old. During the day, they mostly hide in the sand, with only their eyes visible. According to Nautilus, the research team that discovered this squid mentioned they had never seen it before.
They speculate that it resembles squid species commonly found in the northern Pacific, between the waters of Japan and Southern California.
