When should COVID-19 patients lie face down? What are the benefits of this prone position for patients with COVID-19, doctor?
Answer:
Typically, when a person breathes, only the upper part of the lungs is active. The lower lung regions are less engaged, except for those who practice qigong or yoga and focus on breathing from the lower lungs. Patients with COVID-19 who experience shortness of breath should change their lying position to activate all lung functions and supply oxygen to the body.
Therefore, COVID-19 patients are advised to lie face down to enhance lung activity, which helps improve oxygen exchange and alleviates shortness of breath. If oxygen saturation levels drop below SpO2 94% or if the patient feels fatigued, they should lie face down. This will improve their breathing rhythm and increase oxygen saturation.
Regarding the correct prone position: First, lie face down on a flat bed for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Then, shift to lie on your right side for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Next, sit up at a 30 to 60-degree angle for 30 minutes to 2 hours. After that, lie on your left side for 30 minutes to 2 hours, and then return to the prone position, with knees bent, for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Finally, return to the prone position for a similar duration.
Avoid lying face down if you are pregnant, have deep vein thrombosis, cardiovascular issues, spinal problems, or fractures.
Be sure to monitor oxygen levels after each position change. If oxygen levels drop below 92%, and you feel fatigued and experience significant shortness of breath or chest tightness, immediately contact the healthcare system for hospitalization. Do not self-treat at home.
