The majority of emoji users agree that the “laughing with tears” icon is incredibly interesting.
A survey of 7,000 users in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, and South Korea conducted by Adobe reveals that the “laughing with tears” emoji is the most popular emoji in the world. The second and third most popular emojis are the thumbs up (approval) and the red heart, respectively. The “winking kiss” and “sad face” emojis complete the top five.

Adobe announced this finding just before Emoji Day 2021. However, not everyone agrees with the top position. For instance, Generation Z believes that the “laughing with tears” emoji is no longer interesting because older individuals, such as parents and older siblings, use it.
The latest Adobe Emoji Trend Report also highlights the three most commonly misunderstood emojis, which are the eggplant, peach, and clown face icons.
The majority of survey participants (90%) believe that emojis help them express their opinions more easily, while 89% say emojis simplify communication and break down language barriers. Additionally, 67% think that emoji users are friendlier, funnier, and more interesting than those who do not use them.
Many people feel more comfortable expressing their emotions through emojis rather than speaking directly or over the phone. 55% revealed that using emojis while chatting positively affects their mental health. 76% stated that emojis are an important communication tool for fostering unity, respect, and mutual understanding. Furthermore, 88% feel empathy towards other emoji users.
