On September 27, in the presence of His Excellency the Spanish Ambassador to Vietnam, Gonzalo Ortiz Tortosa, and Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People’s Committee, Van Huu Chien, the Da Nang Priority Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board and Industrial Leblan S.L (Spain) signed a contract to supply equipment and technical services for a compost production plant from waste.
This contract, valued at nearly 5 million USD, includes funding from the Spanish Government’s ODA loan covering 50% of the cost, with the remaining 50% financed by the Vietnamese Government. The waste treatment plant will be built and installed at the Khanh Son landfill (Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District) on a total area of 49 hectares, consisting of a new sanitary landfill covering 45.5 hectares and a waste treatment facility occupying 3.5 hectares.
Before treatment, waste will be sorted into inorganic and organic categories. Organic waste will be processed using European-standard tunnel fermentation technology that prevents environmental pollution, producing compost. The plant has a processing capacity of 120,000 tons of waste per year, generating 35,000 tons of compost annually. Inorganic waste will be processed using a high-density compaction line to be formed into bales for disposal.
It is expected that this plant will officially begin operations in early 2007, extending the lifespan of the current Khanh Son landfill (Da Nang) by an additional 30 years and creating jobs for over 100 local workers.
