The Formation Process of the Vietnam Military History Museum
Established on July 17, 1956, the Vietnam Military History Museum (LSQSVN) was initially called the Army Museum, with the primary mission of researching and collecting documents, artifacts, and historical relics left by the Vietnamese military. It documents the history of the nation’s resistance under the direct leadership of the Vietnamese Army and the Communist Party, guided by President Ho Chi Minh.
President Ho Chi Minh affirmed that: “The Army Museum is a living history book that has a significant impact on education. This will be an exhibition that imparts the beautiful traditions to the Vietnamese people, especially the younger generation. At the same time, it will serve as a guide to help foreign visitors understand Vietnam and the just struggle of our people. Therefore, the military museum must create the best conditions for visitors.”

The indoor exhibition area is divided into three main sections: S2, S3, S4, covering topics such as: Vietnamese military history during the Hùng Vương era; An Dương Vương before 1930; the Vietnamese People’s Armed Forces from 1930 to 1975; the heroic August Revolution of 1975; the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign and the Hồ Chí Minh Campaign (1953-1954); and the comprehensive process of building and protecting the homeland from 1975 to the present…
Next, the outdoor exhibition area of the museum consists of two sections featuring artifacts such as wrecked American planes, tanks, cannons, and more. The highlight of the exhibition is 4 national treasures, including 2 MiG-21 aircraft with serial numbers 5121 and 4324; a T-54B tank with serial number 843; and especially the historical map of our army, “Determination of the Hồ Chí Minh Campaign.” All of these are original specimens that clearly demonstrate the will and determination to fight to victory of the entire nation.
In front of the building stands the Victory Monument, 45 meters high, designed in the shape of a five-pointed star stacked in layers, symbolizing the year 1945 when the Vietnamese people gained independence.
The National Treasure Exhibition Area featuring the MiG-21 aircraft with serial number 5121 and the air defense systems that contributed to the victory of “Điện Biên Phủ in the Sky” in December 1972, attracting a large number of visitors.
The museum, which just opened in November 2024, is located at Km 6+500 Thang Long Avenue, Tây Mỗ Ward, Đại Mỗ, Nam Từ Liêm District, Hanoi. Previously, the old museum was located at 28A Điện Biên Phủ Street, Điện Biên Ward, Ba Đình District, opposite Lenin Park.
The new museum was built with a modern design and multifunctional architecture, serving not only as a historical war display but also creating a common space for visitors to interact and experience the struggle for national independence by the heroic Vietnamese People’s Army.
In addition, the museum applies many new exhibition methods, combining 3D mapping technology, information lookup screen devices, media photo archives, automated audioguide narration, and QR codes for artifact and image information lookup. Over 60 video clips introducing battles, campaigns, and historical figures provide visitors with a completely new experience.
The unique experiential space, utilizing modern technologies, is also a highlight that attracts many young visitors to the Vietnam Military History Museum.
Currently, the museum has completed Phase 1 and is receiving feedback from experts and scientists to revise and finalize the exhibition before officially opening to the public on November 1, 2024.
