A new study reveals that flavonoids found in cocoa beans may help prevent fluid accumulation in the small intestine associated with diarrhea.
Horst Fisher, a scientist at the Oakland Children’s Hospital Research Institute in the United States, tested cocoa extract on cultured cells simulating the intestinal environment. The results indicated that flavonoids from cocoa inhibit the secretion of salt and water in the intestines.
In cases of severe diarrhea caused by cholera or E. coli bacteria, excessive loss of fluids and salts through the intestines can disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance, leading to serious consequences.
The researchers noted that cocoa flavonoids inhibit a specific protein responsible for regulating fluid secretion in the small intestine. This discovery could pave the way for the development of natural treatments with minimal side effects.
