Witnessing a deer chewing on the remains of a small snake, most viewers were left astonished.
Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda recently shared a clip showing a deer chewing on a small snake.
In the clip, the deer is standing by the roadside, chewing on something. When zoomed in, the person in the vehicle could clearly see that the deer was munching on the remains of a small snake. “Is it eating a snake?”, the person recording the video remarked.
The clip was shared by the forest officer with the caption: “Herbivores sometimes eat snakes too.”
A user named Science Girl also reposted this moment, explaining the unusual behavior of herbivores.
“Deer are herbivores and are classified as ruminants because their stomach helps them digest tough plant materials like cellulose. However, if food is scarce or if they are lacking certain minerals, they may resort to eating meat“, Science Girl wrote.
The deer is voraciously chewing on the small snake.
According to National Geographic, deer are classified as herbivores, primarily consuming plant materials as their main diet. However, due to deficiencies in certain minerals such as phosphorus, calcium, and salt in their bodies, they may turn to meat. This unusual behavior often occurs during winter or when plant life is scarce in their environment.
Since being shared, the clip has attracted over 152,000 views and received more than 1,733 likes. It has also sparked debates among Twitter users. Many viewers expressed their shock after watching the clip, mentioning that it was the first time they had witnessed such an event in their lives.
