At the QEII Conference held in London, Alistair Darling, the UK’s Transport Secretary, stated that airport security measures cannot be applied to rail systems, and that CCTV systems capable of detecting suspicious activities are among the new techniques to combat terrorism.
The QEII Conference is currently taking place in London with the attendance of traffic managers and security experts from around the world. Mr. Darling noted that several new systems capable of detecting suicide bombers are being tested on railways and underground lines.
A millimeter-wave scanner that can detect concealed explosives and weapons, along with X-ray machines, will be installed at the Heathrow Express station next year. According to the Department of Transport, all of these new anti-terrorism systems will be tested in the underground transport system of the capital, London.
Mr. Darling explained that it is not feasible to apply airport security measures (which involve screening each individual) at train stations due to the extensive length of railway networks.
The conference also welcomed the head of the subway system in Madrid, who is expected to present a viable plan to prevent future terrorist attacks.
